MANILA, Philippines – The camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay expects more demolition attempts from his rivals with a little over two months before the elections.
Reacting to the latest Pulse Asia survey that showed Binay statistically tied with Sen. Grace Poe in first place, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) campaign spokesman Rico Quicho said they expect the attacks to intensify.
“Vice President Binay remains grateful for the trust and support of our people. He is offering to them a decisive and compassionate presidency that will address their concerns, with poverty being his top priority,” Quicho said.
“We expect that with every rise in the survey results, the demolition by perception being waged by lethargic candidates will intensify. The Vice President will not be distracted from his determination to serve the people,” he added.
Binay obtained a two-percentage point increase in his ratings, from 23 percent in January to 25 percent in February, which put him statistically tied with Poe.
Poe, however, suffered a four-point decline from 30 percent to 26 percent.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and administration bet Manuel Roxas II both got a point increase and are tied at 21 percent.
Trailing is Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago with three percent.
Consistent
During one of his campaign speeches in Bulacan, Binay mocked the dismal performance of Roxas in the surveys.
He said Roxas is a consistent fourth placer, saying his supporters should stop believing that he is going to win.
According to Binay, the administration is getting desperate to win votes for Roxas and they now heavily rely on black propaganda.
“Even before, they are already desperate that they would rely on baseless allegations,” he said in Filipino. “But they don’t improve (in surveys).”
Binay was reacting to the latest claim of Liberal Party spokesman Ibarra Gutierrez that Binay has met with former election official Virgilio Garcillano in Cagayan de Oro during last month’s presidential debate.
Garcillano, of the “Hello Garci” fame, reportedly said he was billeted in the same hotel with Binay and Poe as he was a consultant.
Both Binay and Poe denied they were the clients of Garcillano.
But Gutierrez claimed the former election official would complete the dream team of the Vice President in his attempt to cheat his way to the presidency.
