Fix: “Invalid file signature” on some systems
Apparently the required root certificate is once again updated with wrong properties on some systems by the opperating system and the certificate issuer. As a result we need to manually “break” that root certificate on our systems before every release, so that another, more reliable root certificate is used for creating the file signature, that’s compatible on all systems. We’re really sorry for the certificate issues, but this is out of our hands.

Why did Smucker's put a non-GMO label on its peanut butter? #JHedzWorlD
While scrolling through my Facebook feed this morning, I noticed a post by Robyn O’Brien with a photo of a peanut butter jar in it. She had circled some small words at the bottom of the back label, “Made without genetically modified ingredients. Trace amounts of genetically modified material may be present.” *
“That label looks familiar,” I thought. Sure enough, it was the same peanut butter I have in my refrigerator. (The photo above is from the jar at my house.) I’ve never noticed it, so I’m not sure when Smucker’s added the GMO information to its Natural Creamy Peanut Butter label.
But to the best of my knowledge, there are no commercial genetically modified peanuts. Smucker’s can’t make a peanut butter with GMO peanuts. Putting this note on the label is similar to putting a “hormone-free” label on chicken. Chickens can’t legally be given artificial hormones in the United States, so all chicken is free of artificial hormones. The chicken label is purely for marketing purposes, and I would guess the “made without genetically modified ingredients” label on the peanut butter is for marketing, too.
Food companies are aware that consumers want to know what’s in their food, and if the average person doesn’t realize there are no commercially available GMO peanuts, they may see the Smucker’s label and choose this peanut butter over another brand. From a marketing perspective, it seems like a smart move, but it also begs a question:
Why hasn’t the price of Smucker’s Natural Creamy Peanut Butter increased?
Let me explain. One of the arguments against labeling is that changing labels will be costly and the cost will be passed on to the consumer. It’s worth noting that the J.M. Smucker Company has donated well over $1 million to fighting GMO labeling bills, according to Just Label It.
If Smucker’s can add non-GMO information to its labels without increasing the cost, can it add GMO information without increasing the cost, too? Can other food manufacturers do the same? That may be an oversimplification, but it’s worth asking: Are food manufacturers trying to scare consumers into opposing labeling with misleading information?
* About those trace amounts
I was curious why there could be trace amounts of GMO ingredients if neither the peanuts or the salt were genetically modified. One reason could be because the peanut butter is made in a plant that processes other ingredients that are genetically modified.
I researched a little further and found some interesting additional information on the Environmental Working Group’s website. Peanuts are a crop that often gets rotated with cotton, and cotton can be genetically modified. So it’s possible the label mentions trace amounts of GMO ingredients because the peanuts were grown in the same soil as the genetically modified crop.

Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi says BBC should do more regional drama #JHedzWorlD
Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has said the BBC should invest more in regional drama in a bid to better reflect the people who fund it.
His comments come days after he accused the BBC of neglecting Doctor Who, its second most profitable programme, the next series of which he is due to start filming imminently.
Asked by the Radio Times what he would do if given control of an £8bn budget to run the BBC, Capaldi said: “I’d have more regional drama. As the BBC is paid for by the entirety of the nation, that should be reflected in its content more.
“High-quality writing and production should be both encouraged and experienced by people all over the country,” he added.
Earlier this month, Capaldi was quoted as saying that he was frustrated with how Doctor Who had been handled by the BBC.
“The BBC is an incredible organisation but … sometimes people there think ‘that’s looking after itself’. And it’s not being looked after,” he told Newsweek. “I think maybe their eye was taken off the ball, or the show was seen as a thing they could just push around. It’s not. It’s a special thing.”
Capaldi added: “If you’re going to have a family show, I think you have to build up a little ritual around it – and that ritual usually starts with having it on at the same time [each week]. Even I didn’t know what time it was on.”
In recent days, Capaldi has revealed that a new Doctor Who companion has been cast, who he said would bring a “different take” to Jenna Coleman.
Speaking to the Brazilian website Omelete, he said: “Clara [played by Coleman] had prior knowledge of the Doctor. It was conceived as a human connected to your timeline, and so had access to the cosmic nature of the Doctor. She understood a little about how he was. And as she was already with Matt [Smith], she knew the Daleks and the Tardis. Now we have someone who knows very little about the Doctor.”
In his Radio Times interview, Capaldi also said the programme from his youth he would most like to see revived was Noggin the Nog. “It’s a strangely haunting show – I can still hear the music and see the characters. It’s set in the North Lands and is full of snow and vikings, so if it came back it would be more like Game of Thrones.”
And he paid tribute to the Monty Python star Terry Gilliam, who he said was “extraordinarily kind to me, for no reason, and I’ll never forget that”. He said: “To me, the spirit of film-making is totally embodied in Terry Gilliam. He was very influential for me in a way he probably doesn’t even know.”

Is there an idiom like the Russian's "Untilled field"? – english.stackexchange.com #JHedzWorlD
“Непаханое поле” – a [big] amount of undone work.
For example, a person does some finalizing, “polishing” bits of a work (or just lazying about) not realizing that actually the scope is bigger and he should be doing the intensive, more real thing instead.
Imagine someone removing snow from some ground who keeps cleaning up little bits of remaining snow, not knowing that he has missed a chunk of ground with “untilled” snow.
There is a well known expression: Rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
Focussing on small irrelevant details when something much larger is going on all around.
It does carry a connotation of impending disaster if the larger event is not addressed, that may not be what you are after.
majoring on the minors
Others spend so much time and energy on nonessential things that they lose the fundamental items of value. Such keep the peelings and throw away the banana or potato or apple; or, to use another figure of speech, they keep the shells and throw the pearls back.
In brief, such persons are majoring on minors. Everyone majors in something. Some interest or project or activity becomes one’s primary concern. It is his major even though it may be minor. (emphasis is mine.)
Confident people do not waste time majoring on the minors or try to win company popularity contests.
Perhaps “can’t see the forest for the trees.” Which means you’re not seeing the bigger picture.
You may use: when up to one’s neck in alligators, it’s easy to forget that the mission is to drain the swamp
business adage The full expression is some variation of: “When you are up to your neck in alligators, it’s easy to forget that the goal was to drain the swamp.” It is easy to be so overcome or preoccupied by various tangential worries, problems, or tasks that one loses sight of the ultimate goal or objective.
[Farlex Dictionary of Idioms via The Free Dictionary]
Usage:
Look at that guy cleaning up negligible amount of snow when there is truck load of snow to be cleared up on the other side. I guess, when up to one’s neck in alligators, it’s easy to forget that the mission is to drain the swamp!
Though not really a idiom, but the following extract (especially the final line in this snippet) from A Little Learning by Alexander Pope seems to apply well.
So pleased at first the towering Alps we try,
Mount o’er the vales, and seem to tread the sky ;
The eternal snows appear already past,
And the first clouds and mountains seem the last ;
But those attained, we tremble to survey
The growing labours of the lengthened way ;
The increasing prospect tires our wandering eyes,
Hill peep o’er hills, and Alps on Alps arise !
So perhaps you could say:
He thought he’d made progress removing snow until he realized, in the words of Alexander Pope, Hill peep o’er hills, and Alps on Alps arise !
Not sure if it’s really an idiom:
have a lot/enough on your plate
Usage:
“Don’t you have enough on your plate?”
Which in my opinion equivalent to russian:
“У тебя же работы непаханое поле?”
In a context that you have much work to do, so don’t try to pick even more – you should deal with what you’re doing now first.

Cuba dissident detained on way to CNN interview #JHedzWorlD

Soler, Rodiles and roughly 60 dissidents had also been detained for several hours on Sunday after participating in a march in Havana.
Rodiles adds that his movements are being tracked by the police. He expects to be part of the human rights group that will meet with President Barack Obama on Tuesday at the U.S. embassy.
Coincides with Obama visit
Obama is in Cuba on an historic three-day trip, the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited in 88 years.
On Monday, Cuban President Raul Castro denied having “political prisoners” when questioned by CNN’s Jim Acosta during a news conference alongside Obama.
According to Sanchez, there are 77 political dissidents in prison and another 11 under house arrest. These figures do not include the individuals rounded up and detained on Monday.

How to find a tangent line with 2 points of tangency for a curve? – mathematica.stackexchange.com #JHedzWorlD
Say I have a function like this:
f[x_] := 4 x^4 - 9 x^3 - x^2 + 10; Plot[f[x], x, -1, 2] It’s obvious that there’s a tangent line with 2 points of tangency here:
The problem is, how can I find this line programmatically for any such curve given?
We are looking for two distinct values of $x$ for which a generic line and your function have 1) the same $y$ value (i.e. the line touches the curve) and 2) the same derivative (i.e. the line is tangent to the curve).
We can set up the following system of equations spelling out these conditions:
y[x_] := a x + b (* a generic line *) f[x_] := 4 x^4 - 9 x^3 - x^2 + 10; (* your function *) sol = List@ToRules@Reduce[ y[x1] == f[x1], y'[x1] == f'[x1], y[x2] == f[x2], y'[x2] == f'[x2], x2 != x1, x1, x2 ] Notice that Solve wouldn’t work here, because there are no general solutions valid for all values of the parameters (indeed, Solve will return the empty set). Reduce will generate conditions valid for some values of the parameters $a$ and $b$, which is what we are looking for. Reduce returns equations as results, but I converted those to substitution rules for plotting.
Plot[ f[x], y[x] /. sol, x, -1, 2, Epilog -> PointSize[0.015], Point[x1, f[x1], x2, f[x2]] //. sol ] We can package this in a function:
Clear[doubleTangent] doubleTangent[f_, range_ /; VectorQ[range, NumericQ] && Dimensions[range] == 2] := Module[ x1, x2, a, b, y, sol, y[x_] := a x + b; sol = Solve[ f[x1] == y[x1], f[x2] == y[x2], f'[x1] == y'[x1], f'[x2] == y'[x2], x1 != x2, x1, x2, a, b, Reals ]; Plot[ f[x], y[x] /. sol, Evaluate@Flatten@x, range, PlotLegends -> "function", "tangent", Epilog -> ReplaceRepeated[ PointSize[0.02], Tooltip[Point[#, f[#]], Round[#, f[#], 0.01]] & /@ x1, x2 , N@sol ], Inset[ "a = " <> ToString[N[a /. First@sol]] <> "nb = " <> ToString[N[b /. First@sol]], Scaled[0.9, 0.9], Alignment -> Left ] ] ] This function will return the same result found above, with annotations, when used as follows:
doubleTangent[4 #^4 - 9 #^3 - #^2 + 10 &, -1, 2] Yet another case:
doubleTangent[3 #^4 - 12 #^2 + 5 # + 9 &, -3, 3] The tangent line at $x = a$ is given by $f(a)+f'(a)(x-a)$. So we can define:
tangent[a_, x_] := f[a] + f'[a] (x - a) slope[a_] = Coefficient[tangent[a, x], x] intercept[a_] = Coefficient[tangent[a, x], x, 0] Then we want to find two distinct points $a$ and $b$ which have the same tangent line:
sln = Simplify@Solve[slope[a] == slope[b], intercept[a] == intercept[b], b > a, a, b]
a -> 1/16 (9 - 5 Sqrt[11]), b -> 1/16 (9 + 5 Sqrt[11])
There is one solution.
Plot[f[x], tangent[a, x] /. sln, x, -1, 2] f2 = D[f[x], x] x1 /. NSolve[(f2 /. x -> x1) == (f2 /. x -> x2), (f[x2] - f[x1])/(x2 - x1) == (f2 /. x -> x1), x1, x2][[1]] x2 /. NSolve[(f2 /. x -> x1) == (f2 /. x -> x2), (f[x2] - f[x1])/(x2 - x1) == (f2 /. x -> x1), x1, x2][[1]] which for your definition of f[x] results in x1=-0.473945 and x2=1.59895 PS: Note that
NSolve[(f2 /. x -> x1) == (f2 /. x -> x2), (f[x2] - f[x1])/(x2 - x1) == (f2 /. x -> x1), x1, x2] gives alternative coordinates:
x1 -> -0.473945, x2 -> 1.59895, x1 -> 1.59895, x2 -> -0.473945 An interesting alternative—and nice in that it is the shortest and almost the most automated so far—but one that I’m not entirely sure I understand, for reasons to be given along the way:
f[x_] := 4 x^4 - 9 x^3 - x^2 + 10; expr = Series[f[x], x, a, 1] // Normal; sols = DeleteDuplicates@SolveAlways[expr == (expr /. a -> b), x]; Plot[f[x], expr /. #, x, -1, 2] & /@ Thread[a -> (a /. sols)] You can see that a couple of the solutions match the one we’re looking for, most of the rest seem to match inflection points (not verified), and the last is the trivial solution a -> b.
Here is another example, taken from MarcoB‘s solution:
f[x_] = 3 x^4 - 12 x^2 + 5 x + 9; expr = Series[f[x], x, a, 1] // Normal; sols = DeleteDuplicates@SolveAlways[expr == (expr /. a -> b), x]; Plot[f[x], expr /. #, x, -3, 3] & /@ Thread[a -> (a /. sols)] Again, it seems to work in that it finds the solution, but it finds others, too. I will think on this when I have the time.

Spain coach crash which killed 14 had British students on board – Daily Mail #JHedzWorlD
Fourteen people have been killed in a coach crash in Spain that was carrying British students, it has been confirmed, with 30 more people injured.
Authorities said the vehicle hit a railing and then swerved on to the other side of the road on the AP7 highway in Tarragona, Spain, colliding with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
It is not known how many come from the UK but local reports said the injured, mostly aged between 22 and 29, were also from Switzerland, Norway, Turkey and Ukraine as well as from Barcelona.

So far it has been confirmed 14 people were killed in the crash and 30 injured, including British students
Spanish emergency services are pictured removing a body of a victim from the scene of the crash in Spain
The crash, pictured, took place on the AP7 highway near Tarragona after the coach collided with another vehicle
The students were enrolled at the University of Barcelona as part of the European Erasmus exchange programme, said Catalonian Interior Minister Jordi Jane.
They had travelled to Valencia to take part in the renowned ‘Fallas’ fireworks festival and were returning when the bus crashed.
The accident occurred near the small town of Freginals, about 95 miles south of Barcelona.
Around 20 fire crews and seven ambulances were said to have been sent to the seen to help free people trapped inside.
The driver ‘hit the railing on the right and swerved to the left so violently that the bus veered onto the other side of the highway,’ Mr Jane said.
The bus then hit a vehicle coming in the opposite direction, injuring two people inside, he added.
A map showing the location of the bus crash between Barcelona and Valencia in Spain
The University of Barcelona put out a statement on social media offering help to families of the victims
Mr Jane said: ‘They are from various countries. We are currently working on a list of the people and their nationalities.
‘They were related groups and mostly Erasmus students studying at different universities who had organised this trip to Valencia.
‘They were returning in the early hours when this tragic accident occurred.’
Three of the injured are said to be ‘serious.’
Confirming the number of dead as 14, Mr Jane added: ‘I hope and prey the final death toll stays at this dramatic figure.’
He also said the coach driver was at a police station in Tortosa and confirmed 57 people were aboard the vehicle.
Thirty of the injured were being treated in hospital and most of the injuries are described as ‘non life-threatening.’
Catalonian Interior Minister Jordi Jane confirmed the students on board the bus, pictured, were part of the European Erasmus exchange programme
The crash killed 14 people and injured 30 more, with many being treated in hospital this morning
Mr Jane, speaking at a hastily-arranged press conference, said: ‘It appears 57 people including the driver were travelling in the coach.
‘Of these 57 people, 14 have died and 43 people have survived together with two people from Catalunya travelling in the car involved in the accident who were travelling in the opposite direction towards Valencia.
The coach that crashed was one of five coaches belonging to the same firm that were returning together from Valencia but had become separated from the convoy.
In a statement released via social media, the University of Barcelona offered its condolences to the victims’ families and said it would help however it could.
WHAT IS THE ERASMUS SCHEME?
- Erasmus stands for European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students and was founded in 1987.
- It is a European Union exchange student programme with more than 4,000 universities participating across 33 countries.
- It is thought around 3million students have taken part in the study abroad scheme since its inception, with Spain, Germany and France among the most popular destinations.
- Students who join the Erasmus Programme study between three months and a full academic year in another European country. Qualifications gained on the scheme are recognised by a student’s ‘parent university’ when they return.
- Students do not pay extra fees for their time abroad and can apply for grants to cover living costs.
The statement said: ‘The #UniBarcelona sends its condolences to the families and relatives of the victims of today’s bus accident. We remain at your disposal for any further needs.’
Erasmus Student Network Barcelona, an organisation representing Erasmus students throughout the city, also paid tribute to the victims.
A statement said: ‘ESN Barcelona, consisting of ESN Barcelona UB, ESN Barcelona UPF, ESN UPC Barcelona and UAB Barcelona, issues this statement due to the tragic accident that occurred this morning, involving one of our buses of the trip to ‘Las Fallas de Valencia’ organized by ESN Barcelona.
‘There were 57 students in this bus. At the moment and according to official sources, 14 international students have lost their lives.
‘For the moment we know that 13 people are slightly injured and around 30 are hospitalized in several hospitals of Amposta, Reus and Tarragona.
‘ESN Barcelona would like to convey our condolences and join the pain of the families, friends and relatives of the victims.
‘We feel the deep loss. In the same way we would like to express our sincere willingness to be as helpful as possible with the family, friends or institutions.’
Spain’s national radio station RNE spoke to the son of the owner of the company that chartered the bus, only giving his first name Raul.
He said his father was driving another bus in front of the one that crashed.
‘All of a sudden, he stopped seeing it in his rear-view mirror. He stopped at the next service area, called the driver but he didn’t pick up,’ Raul said.
The son added that his father then asked passengers in his own bus to call those in the other vehicle, and that is when he got news of the accident.
‘The driver is in a state of shock, but he’s okay physically,’ he added.
The drivers of the other vehicles are believed to have been told about the accident only when the reached their final destination.

Professional hazard – #JHedzWorlD
When PwC people paid their last respects to former chairman and senior partner Jerry Isla last week after his earnest battle for recovery from a massive stroke, friends told their tales as if they just happened yesterday. It seemed no time was lost even if it was a decade after his untimely retirement.
Former long-time chairman and senior partner Cora de la Paz-Bernardo soothingly referred to Jerry’s transition as a form of “deliverance” (a direct, one-way ticket to heaven); while former chairman and senior partner Tammy Lipana said, “see you soon, Jerry, but not too soon,” remembering she was in no great hurry. But the most poignant narration could only come from Jerry’s daughter as she recounted her tender years. She was given her first pair of black shoes by her dad Jerry, which she would incessantly tap against their wooden floor to emulate the sound made by her dad’s big shoes. Little did she know, she said, that making those sounds with her black shoes was the closest thing to being with her dad when she misses him while he is away from home working. And we all know that those were long hours of work.
This brings us to ask: how many pairs of shoes worn by young daughters tapped on floors while waiting for their dads to come home from work? How many basketballs bounced in play by little boys who were oblivious to the absence of their playmate-father, who would still be buried in professional duties in the office? How many fathers struggle with extreme stress on a daily basis, and don’t show it, for they need to appear strong and resolved rather than worried or sorrowful?
Being part of a profession with the most punishing deadlines, that demands great attention to details in voluminous paperwork, and that requires tons of report writing and analysis gives me perhaps some right to talk about a professional hazard that comes from stress.
I find stress is in large part voluntary. Our revenue targets that keep on increasing every year are self-imposed. Newbies stress themselves with others’ expectations that high academic achievements should translate to superior performance, and anything less is failure. We make commitments, take on new challenges, until we bite off more than we can chew. It’s almost like whipping our own backs, and calling the actual rituals unnecessary self-infliction of pain during Good Friday.
I must say the Supreme Court tends to favor one claiming compensation for work-related sickness .Even if the employee contributed to his sickness through his own bad habits, so long as there is a substantial showing it is work-related, the employee can be awarded compensation. The catch is, these are disability benefits requiring permanent (partial or full) disability. It does not apply to stress-related sickness one can recover from and then report for work again. Besides, too much stress in the work place is a difficult ground to use to claim damages because professionals know the nature of their profession and what they are getting into.
Labor law mandates safety and occupational hazard rules in the workplace but it will not tell people how to live their lives in a certain way. Or for that matter requires an impossible task for employers to avoid stress in the workplace, even if scientifically, stress causes sickness. When the body is stressed, our immune system malfunctions. You can skip learning from experience by just learning from people around you, and appreciate that hypertension, ulcers or migraines visit even persons with a healthy diet.
I am not an authority on exercise, so I will not pretend. But this much I know: when you get stressed, you need to take a minute, or take a day, to de-stress. When you notice your schedule is continuously tight for weeks, you need to make a way to relax that schedule the following week. Be creative about leisure. Take a couple of hours off to watch a movie if you must, or get a massage in the middle of the day.
I am not an expert on health insurance products, but I like those that encourage people to lead healthy lifestyles. I think it should be institutionalized that insurance companies should suggest health programs for the persons they insure. Health insurance premiums should be discounted when the insured follows that program as he lessens the risk. No one wants to recover health insurance premiums by actually getting sick anyway. Still, by all means, get sufficient insurance.
I do not know much about other careers, but I have seen enough to say loneliness, if it doesn’t go away, can be a death sentence for dreams, even for life and limb. If your career does this, you should go and do something else. If your career makes you happy, you can only use it one way, which is up.
As for our profession, work-life quality will always be the aspiration of people in it, and it certainly is not an impossible dream. It is not true that practitioners have very little personal lives, but there is no denying that being a professional is a big part of who we are. Thus, at the onset of this Holy Week, I pray: “Lord, save me from peril, but allow me to burn like a candle. So long as I am able to give useful and positive light, let me burn. And when the day finally comes that my light runs out, let it be because I ran out of wick, but not because I ran out of flame.”

Redundancy Act and Harold Wilson’s legacy | Letters #JHedzWorlD
In the correspondence about Harold Wilson (Letters, 14 and 16 March), nobody pays tribute to the passing of the Redundancy Payment Act 1965. Harold knew that industry needed restructuring and this act was passed to alleviate the pain the restructuring would cause. His attitude came from the personal experience of his father being made redundant. Many hundreds of thousands have benefited from this piece of forward thinking. No wonder Mrs Thatcher wanted to repeal the act.

• When Harold Wilson retired as prime minister he had to be helped out financially by his friends. When Blair retired as prime minister he was worth several millions (Report, 15 March). That says it all.

10 chefs, restos to serve special French menu March 21 #JHedzWorlD
AT THE LAUNCH of Goût de France in Alliance Francaise de Manille, from left: Marc Aubry, Julian Koeber, Justin Baradas, Ambassador Thierry Mathou, Michel Herbert, Paul Cottanceau-Pocard, Adrien Guerrey, Pierre Cornelis
Several years ago, while studying in Alliance Francaise, our instructor joked that the French are the Filipinos of Europe—they’re both noisy, always arguing, and seldom obey the rules. He might as well have added that they both love good food.
On March 21, the convergence of both nationalities will be on the table as the Philippines participates in Goût de France, a worldwide celebration of French gastronomy.
Launched in 2015 by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and chef Alain Ducasse, Goût de France “aims to highlight the culinary tradition of France, which values high-quality, innovative and environmentally responsible cuisine, while promoting France as a prime destination for tourists.”
Participating are 150 countries, as well as 1,500 chefs who had been screened and chosen by a committee of experts led by Ducasse. The idea is for chefs worldwide to serve on the same day a traditional French menu consisting of aperitif, cold starter, hot starter, fish or shellfish, meat or poultry, and a French cheese—accompanied by French wines and concluded with a dessert.
In the Philippines, 10 chefs and restaurants to serve a special French menu on March 21 are: Julian Koeberl (L’Aubergine), Michel Herbert (Le Bistro d’Agathe), Alexander Tanco (Bizu), Marc Aubry (Champetre), Cyril Soenen (Impressions), Kevin Endaya (Lemuria), Justin Baradas (Enderun’s Restaurant 101), Denis Vecchiato and Paul Cottanceau-Pocard (Spiral at Sofitel), Pierre Cornelis (Hotel Benilde’s Vatel) and Adrien Guerrey (La Maison Rose in Cebu).
Cuisine country
France is known worldwide for popularizing the concept of haute cuisine, and is responsible for creating such dishes as bouillabaisse, coq au vin, ratatouille and quiche Lorraine.
It was French chef Marie-Antoine Carême who developed the basic mother sauces used in many of today’s dishes: espagnole, velouté and béchamel.
So valuable is French gastronomy that it has been included in Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2010.
But despite its reputation for being complex and costly, French cuisine is really simple, said French Ambassador Thierry Mathou. He comes from a small town in France, where the food’s emphasis is on the freshness of the ingredients.
But he added that French cuisine is adaptable to new products and techniques. The ingredients don’t have to be purely French to be called French food.
The menu to be served by Marc Aubry in Champetre, for example, includes strawberry gratin made with Baguio strawberries. Restaurant 101’s brie beignets contains a papaya compote. Kevin Endaya of Lemuria has Philippine fruit tart with calamansi sherbet, while dessert at Le Bistro d’Agathe is a layer cake with fresh local mangoes.
Majority of the courses, however, will still revolve around traditional French dishes prepared with a contemporary twist. Spiral’s dover sole meuniere, for instance, is accompanied by cured smoked tomato caviar, caper leaves, lime malto, onion gel and onion oil.
L’Aubergine will serve sous vide cooked duck breast and liver with hazelnut coated potato noodles and cherry jus.
On the other hand, Bizu’s salmon confit will have sides of squid ink risotto and lemon curd.
But in Impressions, Cyril Soenen will serve the classic bouillabaisse as a froth, to be enhanced with hazelnut oil, mashed edamame, squid ink tuile and chorizo chips.
Some of the other dishes were served at a press lunch in the Alliance Francaise. La Maison Rose, the only restaurant from Cebu to join Goût de France, will have grilled duck liver with ginger sauce and homemade spiced bread as well as lemon tart for dessert. Vatel’s canapés will be a trio of oysters Rockefeller, duck rillettes on crouton and grapes rolled in blue cheese with pistachio nuts.
And just for good measure, Spiral will offer l’opera cake and tarte tatin, a rich confection of caramelized apples, dulce de leche, Filo pastry biscuit, topped with caramel tuile, shortbread crumbs and mascarpone Chantilly.
Bigger event
A bigger global event will be launched next year, said Mathou.
The French food festival will also feature French fashion, cinema, music.
There are plans to open a French market in Manila, where cooking demonstrations will be held and all kinds of French products will be sold.
“We want you to know more about France through our cuisine and gastronomy,” said Mathou. “We can develop mutual understanding through them.”
Not that the world isn’t already sold on the merits of French food. Of the 83 million foreign tourists in France last year, more than one-third cited food and wine as reasons for their visit.
If last year’s Goût de France was a success, the participation of the Philippines this year promises to be even better.

[Last Samurai?!] 30 Samurai in Modern Armor Gather for Epic Cavalry Fight #JHedzWorlD
On a chilly day in March, samurai amassed once again at an undisclosed location in Tokyo. Are there even more than there were last time?! Just what are they up to?

The truth is the samurai are part of a promotion for an Indiegogo campaign set to begin at the end of March. Tokyo Otaku Mode is fully supporting the launch of this worldwide project by anisong artist and project producer Bamboo of the music group Milktub. The project will be launched soon, but until then you can get the latest information on it here.
This time, the samurai who gathered were all fans of Milktub. As for how they were already wearing Samurai Armor Hoodies, they had prototype models that were available to fans in limited quantities late last year. The fans volunteered their time and gathered together to shoot a promotional video to support the Indiegogo campaign. We thought we’d share with all of you a bit from the actual video shoot. After taking a look you’ll no doubt find yourself wondering what the final video will be like.

First the samurai met up and began their march single file toward the riverbed. They marched in two lines, looking just like a daimyo’s procession.

Of course, they made sure to strictly follow pedestrian laws. There was no need for an all-out charge.

Finally they arrived at the riverbed. First up was a group shoot. Beautiful!
This is where the real photo shoot begins.

The samurai encircled project producer Bamboo like he was a sensei.

The situation then turned more intense. The name of this is “Samurai of War.” Teams are divided into East and West armies and each team charges at once. It looked just like a battle from the Warring States period.

The shoot continued with “Circle of War” as the samurai encircled Bamboo and ran around him.

Next up was the main event: Kibasen. Have you heard of the game kibasen (cavalry fight) that Japanese school kids play? It’s often played as one of the events at athletic meets in elementary and middle school.

Following this, scenes became even crazier than we had anticipated. You probably can’t help but want to watch the video now, right?

Have you ever seen fans actually having this much fun? That’s because the Samurai Armor Hoodies come from a brand that’s loved so much. It’s the wishes of the samurai for this fan community to spread worldwide. Project producer Bamboo is also giving serious thought to holding fan meetings overseas if the campaign is successful. If you want to see modern day samurai all over the world, please support the Indiegogo campaign! And look forward to seeing the completed video too!
